The World Mosquito Program is working in Sri Lanka to protect communities from mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. 

The World Mosquito Program in Sri Lanka is part of a global, not-for-profit initiative that is working to protect local communities from mosquito-borne diseases

In 2021, we completed the release of Wolbachia mosquitoes in Colombo Municipal Council-District 1 and Nugegoda, covering 20km2 and 240,000 residents. We are currently monitoring the Wolbachia mosquito population and dengue cases, and are encouraged by the preliminary results of Wolbachia establishing in the release areas.

In 2018, we began releasing Wolbachia mosquitoes with the help of community members in CMCD1 and Nugegoda. The project was completed in June 2021.

Over time, we expect Wolbachia to sustain in the population without the need for further releases to protect the community from dengue. 

We plan to extend our project across the Western Province and into other areas of Sri Lanka with a high burden of dengue, aiming to protect more communities from mosquito-borne diseases.

Our project in Sri Lanka is being established in the Colombo area, with the first mosquito releases having taken place in 2020.
